Praise Gathering of the Church of God Chapel announced
The Church of God Chapel, Walkers Road, George Town will commence its September Praise Gathering on Friday 21st and will run to Sun 23rd.
The topic is The Power of Spiritual Disciplines, based on a scripture in I Timothy 4:7b-8 “…Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
Rev. Jack Popjes will bring the messages Sunday through Wednesday. He is a linguist and former missionary to the Canela people of Brazil. He and his wife Jo spent 22 years in Brazil where they learned the previously unwritten language, finding it complicated and fascinating. They learned about and respected the culture, developed an alphabet and a dictionary, taught the people to read, trained teachers, did medical, dental and community development work, produced educational materials and translated a large part of the Bible into the Canela language. Having dealt with a more than the usual allotment of loneliness, disease, opposition and frustrations, he is very capable of expounding on The Power of Spiritual Disciplines.
“I have been learning about and practicing a number of spiritual disciplines for the past 30 years and have shared these insights and experiences with missionaries in Malaysia and Indonesia. I am looking forward to sharing this powerful message with the people of the Cayman Islands,” he said,
After returning from his assignment among the Canela people, Rev. Popjes became the director of Wycliffe Canada the second largest Wycliffe organisation in the world for six years. This time was a period of great change and growth in the organisation with membership growing by 40 per cent and the financial income nearly doubling. After Wycliffe Canada, Rev. Popjes became the director of Wycliffe Caribbean for three years during which time he recruited and trained his successor, Jamaican John Roomes and developed volunteer committees to promote Wycliffe in most English speaking Caribbean nations. Rev. Popjes is also a published author with such interesting titles as A Poke in the Ribs, A Kick in the Pants, A Bonk on the Head.
The regular services start on Sunday, 23 September, with a morning service at the Chapel at 10.30am. Evening services will also be held at the chapel Sunday through Wednesday at 7.30pm. Both Sunday services will be broadcast live by Radio Cayman. The Triple C School band and choir will be participating on Tuesday night.
The church is affiliated with the Church of God, Anderson, Indiana, U.S.A., and is also a part of the General Assembly of the Church of God in the Cayman Islands.
Other member churches of the General Assembly include the Church of God on Town Hall Road in West Bay, the Bodden Town Church of God, the Frank Sound Church of God and the Cotton Tree Bay Church of God in Cayman Brac.
