Cayman’s Premier gets a shock as Speaker comes to his rescue
The vote on Arden McLean’s Private Member’s Motion of One Man One Vote ended in in a deadlock with 6 ‘no’s’ and 6 ‘yes’s’. There were five absentees and this caused Juliana O’Connor-Connolly to cast her vote with Premier Alden McLaughlin.
We knew Progressive (PPM) member from Bodden Town, Anthony Eden, was going to vote for the OMOV motion but the surprise was when his colleague Councillor, Al Suckoo, voted with him.
With four government members, Tara Rivers, Wayne Panton, Marco Archer and Osbourne Bodden all missing one can only surmise McLaughlin’s U-turn was not popular with them.
Ex-premier McKeeva Bush, who also has been against the OMOV, but made plenty of excellent political capital out of it including berating the premier for turning his back on his own supporters, was also missing when the vote was taken.
This is by no means the end of the matter and when the premier’s hybrid version of OMOV finally gets to the house there is no guarantee it will be passed. And he only has himself to blame.
