The organizer and producer of the Mr. Caribbean competition, Antoinette Mora has called on Dominicans to change their mindsets and appreciate the creative talents and expression of the youth.

The Mr. Caribbean show which was held in Dominica on Friday, February 21, saw the participation of seven men from Dominica to the Bahamas.

Although the show, reportedly the first of its kind in the Caribbean did not get the attention of a full house at the Arawak House of Culture in Roseau, it was however hailed a success.

Mora told the audience that Dominicans must change their mind set about the event as many people associated it with homosexuals which is misleading.

“I’ve learn that we stifle creativity, talent and expression of our young men and then we wonder why there’s crime, delinquency, truancy and mayhem”.

She noted that it was very difficult to obtain sponsorship for the staging of the event because of the negativity that many have branded it with.

“I’ve learned that a great idea is not even good if someone in authority isn’t in the mood. But, I have also learned, that there are some warm and wonderful people who didn’t hesitate to partner with us for the show this evening,” Mora stated.

She also expressed disappointment with a decision of the University of West Indies, Open Campus not issue a scholarship for the winner of the pageant. This she described as “heartbreaking”.

She said at least two of the contestants have asked for the show to be held in their country, but she noted that the show will remain in Dominica.

The Mr. Caribbean pageant is expected to become an annual event here.

Meanwhile, Mr. Caribbean 2014 Kadeen Tyson from Nevis told Dominica Vibes that pageantry was not meant for women only.

“It’s not a gay show, I am not gay. I am just clearing the air right there so if you guys think it’s a gay show; it’s not a gay show. It’s a male pageant not only females could do pageantry”.

“It really paid off I had so much family issues and stuff but this was motivation for me, I want to thank the Dominican people for the warm welcome, I am a bigger role model now,” Tyson said.

He said he will take back the experience and friends along with the title “thank God for that so I am coming to Dominica next year again”.

St Lucia’s representative, Sergie Williams dropped out from the competition due to lack of sponsorship.
