Cayman Islands police welcomes visit from Jamaica’s Assistant Superintendent of Police

On Friday, 18 January, the RCIPS welcomed Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr. Coleridge Minto, of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. Asst. Supt. Minto served as the keynote speaker for the Planning for Youth Success Conference which was held at UCCI as part of Support Our Youth Month.

Asst. Supt. Minto, who is also the Director for Security and Safety in Schools, gave a presentation to the students and teachers attending the conference. He began by speaking about the challenges faced by schools in Jamaica, the ways the police have been addressing them in partnership with the schools and students themselves, and the successes they’ve had. He ended his presentation by delivering an inspirational message to the students about how they can live up to their potential, using the story of his life as an example.

Asst. Supt. Minto later visited police headquarters, where he met with the Commissioner of Police and other senior officers, to discuss issues affecting both jurisdictions, local training opportunities, and best practices around community policing.

“It was a pleasure to meet with RCIPS officers, and use this opportunity to help strengthen the relationship between our organizations,” said Ass. Supt. Minto. “Likewise, I was very excited to be able to speak directly to the young people at the youth conference, as I believe that reaching them early is the key to ensuring their success.”

“Asst. Supt. Minto’s talk was enlightening for us, as we look at sharing best practices around community policing and police outreach to youth,” said Inspector Courtney Myles, Head of the RCIPS Community Policing Department. “Our community police officers serve as liaisons to the schools, so for us it was a good opportunity for CPD officers to hear how problems are being addressed and partnerships created in our neighboring jurisdiction.”
