Remembering
I remember in days of yore when I was four
Sitting on papa’s shoulders
In and out of the warehouse
Bees stinging making me sore.
Taking rides on business trips, always being driven
Sitting on Papa’s knees was my idea of Heaven
That was the safest way of travelling in days of yore.
I remember playing – chasing chickens
In Cuz’ Rosa’s garden and laughing like the dickens
And tripping and falling in a deep well
When I hit the water at the bottom I started to yell
A family friend was passing by and heard the racket
And he shouted for someone to get a rope and bucket.
I remember playing marbles and the Queen of the Ring was I
Losing a game was never in my mind – don’t ask me why.
I remember playing cowboys and Indians with Steve, Elon and Stubby
They kept me as the cook in the kitchen and I was always grubby.
I remember cycling with friends I loved so dear
7 of us on 1 bicycle, not a care or a bit of fear.
I remember swimming and diving from North and South, East and West
It was always a challenge for me to prove I was the very best!
I remember horseback riding with Pearl’s “wild daughter” Sarah Lee
We never knew what a saddle was, it wasn’t used here you see
But we loved the wild life my friend Sarah Lee and I
That’s why we climbed trees and tried to reach the sky.
For this was all good clean fun, plenty of exercise and friendly play
Now I’ll close my thoughts and hope you remember what you did yesterday.
