If you have tried to get booked for speaking engagements with no success, don’t get down. On average it takes about 4+ years for people to figure it out. What’s worse, some take even longer to even get paid to speak. 

I want to change that. Simply put if you want to get paid to speak you have to do the following 5 things below: 

First, you have to have a Purpose for speaking. Do you want to speak on stage for lead generation and get clients for your business or do you want to speak for revenue generation to get paid to speak by clients seeking experts. That decision must be made in advance so that you can target the right clients strategically. 

Secondly, you have to have a Product, which is your intellectual property or in other words your “Signature Talk”. A lot of first time speakers think that they are the product when in fact you, your identity, and your looks are all packaging. The product is your content that you will deliver on stage and that needs to be created before event organizers can take you seriously. 

Third, you have to Position yourself for speaking engagement opportunities. To receive inbound invitations to speak you have to craft a value statement which is one sentence that articulates who you serve, what you provide them and why you do it. This simple one line sentence will make you a magnet for speaking engagement opportunities. 

Fourth, you have to have a Speaker Proposal, and here lies the transition that takes you from constantly speaking for free to getting paid to speak. This 1-2 page document will outline your signature talk and the objectives, takeaways and benefits that your audience will receive from hearing you on stage. I always say that great speaker proposals lead to nice invoices that get you paid. 

Fifth, last but not least you need a Process to create a profitable pipeline system that gets you consistent speaking engagement opportunities. There are hundreds of databases and free networks to find event organizers and if you have your scripts and templates ready to engage and close them, you will have a lucrative speaking career.
