Retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn called the intelligence briefing given to Donald Trump Wednesday a “great conversation” that was merely the start of a “long dialogue” between the intelligence community and who he feels is the next president of the United States.

Flynn, a former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, accompanied Trump to the briefing, which took place in a secure room at an FBI building in New York City. He spoke with Fox News Wednesday evening about the two-hour session that included presentations from several people in the intelligence field.

“We really only scratched the surface today on many of the complexities that the next president of the United States is going to face,” Flynn said.

Among the topics discussed were the Islamic State (ISIS) and Russia.

“We did spend quote a bit of time talking about this problem today,” Flynn said of ISIS.

“It was emphasized the fact that this enemy needs to be clearly defined and the American public needs to know that the leader that is in the White House understands the scale, the scope that we face from this threat, and we need to be able to go after this doctrine of radical Islamism. That’s one of the things that Donald Trump has talked about in spades.”

Flynn said America needs to stop telling the world what it plans to do militarily.

“We should no longer be the best enemies in the world where we continue to telegraph exactly what we’re going to do, if in fact Donald Trump becomes the president of the United States,” said Flynn, who called the intelligence briefers “real professionals.”

Flynn called reports that Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort has ties to a pro-Russia group “noise” and “nonsense.”

“We did talk about Russia today. I won’t get into any of the specifics,” Flynn said. “Russia does not have the same perspective and the same belief in the way the world ought to work as we do. Everybody needs to understand that.

“Russia, at times, though, Russia is deeply involved in the middle East. Most of your audience has seen some of the actions from the Russians just recently flying out of Iran as an example and conducting operations into Syria. So there’s a problem, Russia is part of this problem.”

Earlier Wednesday, Trump told Fox News he doesn’t trust many of the people who have been conducting the intelligence briefings in recent years and vowed to use different people.

Flynn said the intelligence information he heard Wednesday proved to him that the Obama administration — which included Hillary Clinton when she served as his secretary of state — is not making the appropriate policy decisions.
