Irene Heemskerk heads up the European Central Bank’s climate change centre, a body created three years ago to shape and steer the central bank’s climate agenda both internally and externally.
Reporting directly to ECB President Christine Lagarde, Heemskerk is responsible for looking at ways banks can integrate climate change into risk management frameworks, better improve regulation and standardization of climate-related exposures and protect high-risk portfolios such as property and agriculture.
Heemskerk, who represents the ECB in the Central Banks and Supervisors’ Network for Greening the Financial System, sits down with Reuters U.S. Economics Editor Dan Burns during New York Climate Week to discuss the new climate initiatives being pursued by the ECB.
