As Europe’s largest lender by assets and a leading provider of finance to companies in China and other markets in Asia, HSBC is primed to play an increasingly central role in the world’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Overseeing the bank’s push to reach net zero emissions across its business by mid-century, Celine Herweijer’s team is grappling with how to provide support for corporate boards as lack of regulatory support and technological development in some sectors jeopardises hopes to halve global greenhouse gas emissions by the end of the decade.

Reuters Sustainable Finance Editor Simon Jessop speaks with Herweijer, a climate scientist and NASA Fellow, and Richards, president of HSBC Ventures, about the challenge of providing ‘transition’ finance to companies, the outlook for climate tech and potential hot investments in the months ahead.
