Richard Christian announces candidacy for the District of Bodden Town

compass picwebRichard Christian has announced his intention to contest a seat in the electoral district of Bodden Town, as a running mate of MLAs Mark Scotland and Dwayne Seymour.

“I’ve been mulling over this decision for more than a year, after becoming dissatisfied with many of our political leaders; their lack of accountability, disregard for moral and ethical principles and the declining fortunes of our people. I believe I possess the character and leadership skills to make a difference. And because I want to see change, I have to help make it.”

Born of Caymanian parents from George Town and Cayman Brac, Richard is contesting a seat in the island’s fastest-growing District.

“Bodden Town has always been a beautiful district, which is one of the reasons it is drawing so many young families and first-time homeowners who want to live in a safe community,” said Richard. To preserve the rich community and meet needs of a growing population, we need representatives that are accessible, transparent and caring.”

With nearly twenty years of experience in the Financial Industry, Richard is well acquainted with accountability, teamwork and professionalism. He began his career as a filing clerk at a local bank and rose to the position of manager within Caledonian Group, demonstrating humility, perseverance and a strong work ethic.

Richard is especially concerned about Cayman’s high-cost of living, rising unemployment, lack of job advancement and opportunities for Caymanians, substance abuse and the need for vocational scholarships/training.

“I know what many families are going through firsthand, whether it’s living under rigid financial constraints, challenges of raising a young family or the heartache of having a family member who has a substance abuse problem.”

Since a young age, Richard has been involved in the community and demonstrating leadership. He was a 2011 finalist for the Young Caymanian Leadership Award (YCLA) and a recipient of the “Spirit of Excellence Award in Exemplary Christian Service” at the 2010 National Heroes Day.

He serves as president of the Newland Heights Resident’s Association where he resides, Vice President of the Savannah Primary School PTA where his children attend, and deputy chairman of the Bodden Town District Council, where he coordinates community meetings, community projects, assist citizens with various matters and organizes the annual children’s and senior Christmas parties on behalf of MLAs Mark Scotland and Dwayne Seymour. In 2012, Richard was very instrumental and the driving force behind the completion of three community parks in the Newlands area.

Richard also sits on the government appointed National Youth Commission and was on the steering committee for the YMCA Cayman.

A widely acknowledged positive role model and influential speaker, Richard has been invited to speak at various churches, opening prayers, and schools and is a regular guest speaker at the Passport2Success program where he shares his self entitled message the “Road2Success”. He was most recently chosen as one of the speakers to serve on the YCLA Speakers Bureau which will be aimed at motivating and empowering the next generation.

“In order to be a good leader, I believe that you must first be a great servant. My community contributions and achievements have proven that I am a positive role model for our children and an effective leader for our country. People are eager for results, I am eager to work.”

Richard is a born-again Christian and is a member at Savannah United Church, where he teaches Sunday school, is a youth leader and serves on the Board of Elders. He and his wife Theresa are the proud parents of Aliyah and Amar and guardians of his sister-in-law Brianna. They reside in the Savannah-Newlands area in Bodden Town.
