Cayman National Bank robbery – Fourth man arrested

Police confirmed Tuesday (3rd) that a fourth person has been arrested in connection with the Cayman National Bank robbery.

A 29-year-old man was charged and  in court also on Tuesday  in connection with last week’s Cayman National Bank robbery.

The man, who was arrested on Thursday (28) evening,  was charged with robbery and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The two additional people arrested in connection with the crime remain in police custody while enquiries continue.

Police continue to carry out enquiries in the West Bay area relating to the bank robbery. The RCIPS have confirmed  that as a result of those enquiries a substantial quantity of cash has been recovered on Friday (29).

On Thursday detectives searched for three masked men who held up staff at the Cayman National Bank and made off with cash earlier that day. About 9.42 am 911 received a report that three men, all armed with what appeared to be firearms, had entered the Buckingham Square branch of Cayman National Bank. The gunmen threatened staff before running from the premises with a sum of cash. The suspects entered their getaway vehicle, a white Toyota Windom, and as they began to drive off from the scene they collided with an armoured cash van. The collision blocked their exit from the car park and they then ran off from the car towards the Esterley Tibbetts Highway. They dropped some of the cash as they made their escape.

The suspects were then seen to enter a red Chevrolet Equinox which drove along the highway towards West Bay.

On receipt of the initial call several police units were immediately deployed to the area. Officers, acting on the information received about the red car set up road checks and carried out extensive searches for the vehicle. A short time after the robbery the car was recovered in the West Bay area. Officers are carrying out enquiries at two addresses in West Bay in connection with the ongoing enquiry.

There have been some suggestions that officers took between 20 – 30 minutes to attend the scene of the bank. Initially the RCIPS had responded to those concerns by confirming that the first uniformed officer attended the bank 16 minutes after the initial call. However, having reviewed the incident, we can now confirm that two plain clothes officers were on scene within 8 minutes of the initial 911 call.  These officers attended the scene while operational staff set up road blocks and undertook other operational duties relating to the incident.

The suspects are described as follows:

1                     5’8” in height wearing long jean pants, white shirt, a reflective vest and a yellow/ orange hard hat

2                     5’11” in height, dark brown complexion and shoulder length dreadlocks. He was wearing a white/ light coloured shirt, dark pants, and a camouflage cap

3                     5’9”- 5’10” in height, wearing dark clothing, a yellow/ orange hard hat and spoke with a Jamaican accent.

Officers continue to follow a positive line of enquiry and are once again appealing for anyone who witnessed the robbery or saw the suspects either before or after the incident to come forward. Information can be passed to George Town police station on 949-4222, the RCIPS tip-line 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477(TIPS).
