Rotary Sunrise Promotes Literacy

International Literacy Day was observed by the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman on Friday 7th September.

To mark the day the Club donated dictionaries to every Year 7 student across the Cayman Islands with books being sent to Cayman Brac later this month.  In all over 600 books were distributed. Members of the Club visiting the schools to present the dictionaries were heartened to see well-thumbed copies of the dictionaries distributed last year on the desks of children who had received them.

Primary school children were not forgotten with Rotarians and friends of the Club visiting several primary schools including George Town, John A Cumber, Prospect, East End and North Side Primary Schools to read to the children. One of the readers was Honorary Rotarian Police Commissioner David Baines who took time out of his busy schedule to read to pupils at East End Primary School.

Members of the Club are looking forward to the resumption of their regular weekly one-on-one reading programs in several schools.

The Club would also like to extend a special thank you to Books & Books who offered a 10% discount on all children’s books sold on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th September.

Rotary Sunrise is a diverse group of likeminded professionals ages 30 years and older committed to serving their community. The Club meets at the Grand Old House Restaurant for breakfast on Wednesday mornings at 7:00am. For more information visit the Club’s website www.rotarysunrise.ky.
