webROY McTaggart announces campaign as independent candidate for the District of George Town

“Honest leadership that will create opportunity for all Caymanians”

George Town, Grand Cayman – January 7, 2012 Businessman Roy M. McTaggart today announced his intention to contest the 2013 general elections as an Independent candidate for the electoral district of George Town.

“I love my country! I grew up on Crewe Road, the son of William (‘Uncle Bill’) McTaggart Sr. and Carlene McTaggart. I am one of 6 siblings, three brothers and two sisters. My love for these islands grew through the pride instilled by my parents and my interaction with the community. I attended school locally after which I pursued my degree in accounting. I returned home to build my career and start a family. This is the only place I call home,” McTaggart said.

“Over the last few years, I (like my fellow Caymanians) have seen our country being led off course by two successive governments that clearly lack the ability to lead our country effectively. In more recent times, the examples of overspending, allegations of corruption and a lack of competent leadership have led to increasing debt, fiscal deficits and dysfunction in government. It is time for Caymanians who are qualified and able, to step up and give back to a country and its people who have done so much, for so many, with so little. It is time for us Caymanians to elect people who have this country at heart and who will work to restore the quality of living we once enjoyed by bringing honor and pride in a government that is truly for the betterment of these islands. I believe that my country comes before self interest and that I can work toward it’s restoration,” Roy McTaggart continued.

“With the support of my fellow George Towners, as your MLA, I will put more than thirty years of successful business experience to work for a better Cayman. I will work to ensure that the people of George Town and the Cayman Islands are afforded every opportunity they need to earn their place in our community. And, I’ll put my financial experience to work for the people of the Cayman Islands, developing policies to grow our economy in a positive and sustainable way, put an end to excessive and wasteful spending – and ensure that we reinstate the high quality of life that our people once enjoyed, expect and deserve.” Roy McTaggart continued.

In the wake of wide spread allegations of corruption in government, Roy McTaggart is also committed to raising the ethical bar, and making the Cayman government more transparent and accountable, leading by example.

“Our leaders are here to serve our people, not themselves. As a CPA, I’ve followed a strict code of ethics my entire career. As your representative, I’ll work to ensure we maintain a high ethical standard within our government, including policies that bring more transparency and accountability to government projects and in our spending, because we can never be too honest.” said Roy McTaggart.

Roy’s contributions to the Cayman Islands are numerous. He is a former Chairman of the Board of Cayman Airways, a member of the Commission for Standards in Public Life and Chairman of the Young Caymanian Leadership Foundation. He has been active in many roles in the community from serving in several roles with the Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce, including two years as President, he has also been the Treasurer of the Church of Christ, and enjoys mentoring young Caymanian students in need of positive roles models.

Roy is married and is the father of three daughters.
