Soccer: Olimpia make history by downing Seattle in penalty shootout
ATTLE, Washington – Honduran club Olimpia have won a knockout round for the first time in their Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League history after defeating the Seattle Sounders 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw in the second leg of their Round of 16 series.
The 2-2 draw resulted in a 4-4 draw on aggregate, and from the spot the Hondurans proved superior to punch their quarterfinal ticket.
Olimpia could not have asked for a better start as they took a 1-0 lead in the 4’ through Elvin Oliva.
Seattle looked to respond and it came from Cristian Roldan, who headed into net in the 20’ to level the score 1-1.
It was a steady back-an-forth between the two teams as play rolled into the second half, and Seattle would find a 2-1 lead in the 64’ on a right-footed rocket from Joao Paulo.
But Olimpia never gave up and a blazing right-footed shot from Carlos Pineda rippled the back of the net in the 86’ to pull Olimpia level 2-2.
That set the stage for a penalty shootout, and after Roldan missed over the crossbar, Olimpia GK Edrick Menjivar saved Jordy Delem’s attempt, allowing Johnny Leveron to stroke in the winning penalty.
