Soccer: Vela leads LAFC’s thrilling comeback vs. Club Leon
LOS ANGELES, California – Carlos Vela scored a brace to lead Los Angeles FC to a thrilling 3-0 win over Club Leon in the second leg of the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 on Thursday night at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles.
With the result, Los Angeles FC claimed a 3-2 win on aggregate and a spot in the quarterfinals versus Cruz Azul.
Los Angeles FC came out in aggressive fashion and they were rewarded for their efforts with a Vela goal in the 27’ for a 1-0 lead, and cutting the aggregate deficit to 2-1.
The pressure was steady from the home side, as they searched for a second goal in the second half to even the series, but Club Leon GK Rodolfo Cota had other ideas with several excellent saves.
Los Angeles FC’s poking and prodding finally paid off, as Vela redirected in a cross in the 77’ for a 2-0 lead in the match and 2-2 on aggregate.
Diego Rossi then brought the home fans to their feet again with a sensational left-footed shot that looped over Cota and into goal for a 3-0 lead in the 79’ that proved to be the winning strike.
