The week starting Monday, 20 August, GIS Spotlight focuses on youth and tourism, and revisits Grand Cayman’s own Blue Iguanas and an innovative workshop.

A Department of Tourism led initiative strives annually to involve more of Cayman’s youth in the Islands’ tourism. Come with us to hear about an interesting competition that provides a fresh perspective on Cayman’s vibrant tourism product. Learn about this year’s theme and discover what makes this competition special to tourists and residents alike.

Then, we’re off to encounter Grand Cayman’s biggest land animal, the Blue Iguana, a species native to the island long before humans even set foot on it. Having been reduced to near extinction in a few short centuries, the reptile is making a steady recovery because of ongoing efforts through a recovery programme.

Join us to learn about the programme’s progress and how much more needs to be done to ensure the Blue Iguana thrives.

After that, we revisit a 3Ri (regional risk reduction initiative) workshop that Cayman hosted for English and Dutch overseas countries and territories. See how this EU-funded, UNDP-run initiative is gearing these nations to reduce risk from natural hazards and climate change with comprehensive disaster management.
