Spence wins silver in triple jump at NACAC U-23 Championships [Cayman’s Barnes finishes 9th]

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA track & field junior Danielle Spence won silver at the 2019 North American, Central American, & Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships held in Queretaro, Mexico, over the weekend. 

Spence, a rising junior, competed for her home nation of Jamaica in the U-23 Championships, finishing second with a 13.24-meter mark in triple jump, behind only Cuban Davisleydis Velazco’s 13.94m mark. 

Spence was joined in the competition by fellow Roadrunner Lacee Barnes, a rising junior who represented her home country of Grand Cayman. Barnes finished ninth in the U-23 Discuss Championships. 

Spence had a strong 2018-19 season for the Roadrunners, earning a spot in the NCAA West Preliminary round for the second consecutive year in triple jump. She earned silver with a UTSA-record mark of 13.42m (44-0.5) at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships and won the 2018-19 C-USA Indoor Championship and second-team All-America accolades at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the triple jump. 

Barnes, who also competed for the Cayman Islands at the 20018 IAAF World U-20 Championships, was named UTSA’s Outstanding Sophomore of the Year in 2019. A 2018 Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll member, she owns personal bests of 14.20 meters (46-7 ¼) in the shot put, 49.03m (160-10) in the discus, 38.67m (126-10) in the hammer throw and 13.86m (45-5 ¾) in the weight throw.
