Spielberg’s West Side Story
Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story looks incredible in first picture of Tony and Maria
By Abigail Gillibrand From Metro UK
We’ve finally been given a first glimpse at Steven Spielberg’s upcoming take on the classic musical West Side Story.
And it looks incredible. Rachel Zegler, who will play the iconic role of Maria, can be seen looking all doe-eyed, as she glares up at her man Tony (played by The Fault In Our Stars actor Ansel Elgort).
There’s a romantic twist to the picture as the pair can be seen holding hands while the two gangs approach them from either side.
Dressed in muted red and orange, the Sharks walk close by to Maria, as the Jets, who are in green and black, are in clear view next to Tony.
The tension is palpable as the image tries to tell the much loved Romeo and Juliet tragedy in just one shot.
And we think they did a fantastic job at capturing the iconic story arc, which is sure set to break hundreds of hearts later this year.
Mike Faist will be seen on the big screen as The Jets’ leader Riff, and will be joined by the likes of Ezra Menas as Anybodys, Ben Cook as Mouthpiece, Sean Harrison Jones as Action, and Patrick Higgins as Baby John.
While David Alvarez will lead the Sharks as Bernardo, alongside his gang Julius Anthony Rubio as Quique, Richard Zayas as Chago, Josh Andrés Rivera as Chino, Sebastian Serra as Braulio, and Carlos Sánchez Falú as Pipo.
Fans were quick to comment on the post, that was shared by the film company Amblin. ‘
Amazing photo – so excited for this movie!’ one wrote while another expressed their fears for the film: ‘All I hope, is that they can dance.
‘Not just “We did some classes” dance, like pro-level dance. Tired of Hollywood discounting dance talent as important (ie Lala Land).’
Someone else wrote: ‘It’s all very good, but did it need a remake?’
But despite the picture looking great, it could have been a whole lot different, as Liam Payne recently revealed he auditioned for Tony.
The Strip That Down singer spoke about his acting abilities on Capital Breakfast teasing: ‘The first thing I ever auditioned for was for the remake of West Side Story which is being done by Steven Spielberg.
‘On my last birthday I got a message saying “you need to go and meet SS on Thursday”. So I had to go and do an audition in front of him which was quite wild.’
Sadly, Liam didn’t get the part, explaining: ‘No, I didn’t get it but I was in like the last five people for it which I was quite happy with ’cause it was a difficult – it was a big part in the film.
‘Yeah, and it was the first audition I had ever done and I put four tapes in and then managed to get to meet Steven Spielberg so it was pretty amazing.’
