St Andrew Prep Travelling Theatre taking J’can culture to Cayman
JAMAICA’S rich culture will be on show in the Cayman Islands this week when members of St Andrew Preparatory School’s Travelling Theatre participate in a week-long exchange programme there.
The group of 40 students and 13 adults — among them the school’s principal Karlene Fraser, board chair Jacqueline Hinkson, teachers and parents — is scheduled to leave Jamaica on Sunday.
Describing the trip as a wonderful opportunity to showcase Jamaica’s culture, Fraser told the Jamaica Observer that the group will interact with students from Red Bay, Bodden Town, East End, and North Side Primary schools in sessions on the history and heritage of Jamaica and the Cayman islands.
They will also be guests at a dance production at the Harquail theatre.
“We are very excited about the trip,” said Travelling Theatre members Courtney Williams and Tahaj-Rae Gordon.
Hinkson said she too was excited, adding that the members of the Travelling Theatre are all very talented.
“I am looking forward to the display of talent they will exhibit in a sister island,” Hinkson said yesterday.
The highlight of the week will be a cultural show at Mary Miller Hall on Saturday, May 26, the proceeds from which will be donated to a charity.
The visit is being held under the theme ‘Think Big’, a step up from theme, ‘Rising Above the Bar… Together’, coined last December when the Travelling Theatre was launched.
Fraser said that since then, the group has been “touching lives and blessing hearts in different parishes” using instrumental music (guitar, violin, drums, keyboard), song, sign language, dance, speech and drama.
She said that one goal of the group is to empower students through their gifts and talents.
Fraser also said that the trip would not have been possible without the assistance of sponsors GraceKennedy, Charles Chocolate/Devon Biscuits, Cari-Med, Nestle, NCB Foundation, Douglas Halsall, the school’s parent teachers association and board, Lester and Heather Wade, Tastee Ltd, Dr Audrey McIntosh, and the United Church (Cayman Islands).
