Stop calling National Building Fund a “slush fund” shouts premier
He was defending his National Building Fund (NBF) of $4.6M that has been included in his Budget and will be used to “build the nation”.
”It is here to stay!” he exclaimed.
In an interview he gave to CITN-Cayman 27 on Friday (24) he said the two main critics of the NBF, Independent MLA’s Arden Mclean and Ezzard Miller, who said there was no need for a fund in these times of austerity and others who likened the NBF to a “slush fund” were “talking rot”.
He said there were going to be very stringent criterias tied to it and he wouldn’t be able to “dip his hand into it” whenever he felt like it.
The fund is there so when “various problems arose it could be dealt with quickly.”
The fund seemed to be aimed mainly at providing scholarships for children that the other programmes did not cater for.
“No child should be prohibited from obtaining an education,” he said.
Ezzard Miller in his criticism of the fund said it was there “to influence votes”.
“I believe most Caymanians would prefer to use one third of your Nation Building Fund to fight crime rather than give it to churches to build edifices unto themselves at great cost to our local social environment,” he stated.
