Tenth Anniversary of link between Newcastle and the Caribbean island of Grenada
By Emily From neconnected
While some people may not associate Newcastle with the Caribbean, the link is strong at Northumbria University. The year 2017 marks the tenth anniversary of the Keith B Taylor Global Scholars Program, which gives students of St George’s University (SGU) the opportunity to complete their first year at Northumbria. Around 1,800 students from around the world have taken part in the programme.
On Friday 13 January, the latest enrolees took to the stage to be ‘robed’ in their white coats; a traditional ceremony to mark the start of their medical careers. The students then made a professional commitment to the medical profession. They can be seen here standing in a figure of ‘10’ to mark the anniversary between Northumbria and SGU.
Master of Ceremonies was Dr Changa Kurukularatne, an infectious disease specialist and alumnus of SGU, who was a participant in the University’s inaugural White Coat Ceremony. The keynote speaker was Dr Lee Todd Miller, Professor of Paediatrics and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
