Testing has started at the Bodden Town Solar Farm

Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd. (CUC) and the independent solar project developer Entropy Cayman Solar Limited have started the testing and commissioning of the 5MW Bodden Town Solar Farm and interconnection equipment which will see CUC begin to receive electricity from the solar farm. The testing and commissioning phase will take approximately 2 weeks at which time, Cayman’s first utility scale solar project will be delivering renewable energy to our customers.

Vice President Customer Services & Technology, Mr. Sacha Tibbetts, says, “While we do not expect any interruptions in service during the commissioning process, it is possible that we may need to take local sections of the grid offline and unfortunately disrupt service for some customers during short periods of time. However, CUC will take all possible steps to ensure that power is not interrupted. CUC is committed to providing reliable service and we appreciate the patience and support of our customers as we incorporate this exciting renewable energy source to our generation fleet.

The solar farm will provide the equivalent energy used to serve approximately 800 homes, and will reduce the use of diesel fuel and the associated emissions into the atmosphere.

The first of its kind in Grand Cayman, the project is expected to be completed by early June.

Mr. Tibbetts says, “CUC has been pursuing utility scale renewable energy projects for many years now and we are pleased that after so many challenges and delays we are at the stage where energy flowing from this solar project is imminent.”

An event to officially open the Bodden Town Solar farm is being planned for June 20th.
