The 2013 PwC Cayman Men’s Invitational Championships
I would like to say that I am happy with all of you that have come out and supported this great tennis event that the Cayman Islands Tennis Club is hosting. Again, the level of tennis was fantastic today and it will only get better, and that is a promise. I would also like to say to all those people that have said, “It sure would be great to see some great tennis on the Island” or for those that have said, “Why don’t we try to get good players to come down for a tournament”. Well, this is it! So for those that have not come down yet to see some great tennis, you all still have a chance. This will be the best PwC Cayman Men’s Invitational that the Island has seen and the semi-finals will begin on Friday at 5:30 PM. The semi-finals will showcase three out of the four people with a top 300 ATP ranking sometime during their career, plus an up and coming Jamaican that was the finalist in last year’s PwC Cayman Men’s Invite will also be here on Friday to try for his first title.
But first, the results from this evening. We had four quarter-final matches on tonight, 2 at 5:30 and then another two at 7:00. To start out the action at 5:30, we had the number one seed, Dennis Zivkovic, take on Mica Koll in a straight set match. Dennis won 6-1, 6-2. In the other 5:30 match, the number 4 seed, McCoy Malcolm defeated Ilian Nachev 6-2, 6-2. The next pair of matches, the number 2 seed, Philip Bester from Canada defeated Richard Bullbring 6-0, 6-0. Then there was a repeat match of last year’s PwC Men’s Invite with Stefanno Ianni the number 3 seed facing off against Marcus Malcolm again. However, it was the same result as last year and Stefanno proved to be the one in the match and winning 6-2, 6-0.
The next event this evening was the first round of the doubles round robin. The doubles this year is much like it was last year where there are two groups of four teams each. Much like the ATP Master Final event at the end of the year. What this means to all of you? You all get to see more doubles matches than you normally would. And this year there is a doubles team that has been as high as the top 130 in the world, Dennis Zivkovic and Stefanno Ianni, so all of you Club players that want to see a high level of doubles need to come out tomorrow and watch the 2013 PwC Cayman Men’s Invite. We will have two rounds of doubles tomorrow while we take the day off from the singles event. The action will start tomorrow at 6:00 PM with the second round of the doubles round robin and then at 8 PM we will witness the third and decisive round of the doubles round robin.
Attached is the schedule of play for the action tomorrow evening.
I would like to take this time to thank the tournament’s primary sponsor, PwC! And I would like to thank Cayman National for their sponsorship as well. If we did not have these two companies, then it would be very difficult to have the event.
I would also like to thank “Boss Hoggs BBQ” ! I must admit, I think they serve the best burger on the Island!
Thanks again, and we hope to see as many eager fans as possible in the next three evenings.
Thursday will be two rounds of doubles 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
Friday will be the two semi-final matches, 5:30 PM and then the next semi-final match to follow.
Saturday will be the 2013 PwC Cayman Men’s Final Singles Match as well as the doubles final to follow.
Take care and goodnight from the Cayman Islands Tennis Club!
