The Big DrawGreetings!

The month of October is the Big Draw month in fifteen countries, with over 200,000 people taking part every year. Hundreds of new and enjoyable drawing activities connect people of all ages with museums, galleries, outdoor spaces, artists – and each other. These events are for those who love to draw, and those who think they cannot!

The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands will be hosting a range of Big Draw activities during October, including an exhibition, documentary screenings, a panel discussion, live model drawing in Cayman Brac, and a day of free creative activities for the whole family!

The four-part BBC series, presented by Andrew Graham-Dixon, explores how drawing has shaped our lives. Join him to discover the history of drawing and its relevance to the modern world.

Family Fun drop-in session

Get arty with your kids at this family drop-in session. Try out drawing illustrations and cartoons inspired by the popular Tom Gates series of books, and create your own mini book all about you!

Drawing stations

Throughout the day you can stop by one of our drawing stations to try drawing a range of subjects. Learn the easy way to draw a labyrinth, follow a step-by-step guide to drawing a parrot, and try your hand at drawing Manga villains!

Draw the future competition

Using images in the gallery for inspiration we are asking children and young people to ‘draw tomorrow’. Using their imagination and drawing skills can they create a picture showing a car, boat or stamp of the future? Prizes will be award for the best drawings.

Screenings

Enjoy finding out about the secrets of drawing as explored in two BBC documentaries being shown during the morning of our Family Fun day. Then at 1pm we will be showing Spirited Away. Made by Studio Ghibli a Japanese studio known for its anime features. This is a film of mesmerising beauty, which is frequently cited as one of the greatest animated features of all time.

Sign up for a workshop and try out a range of techniques:

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM—Pen, ink, and bleach designs with Dinah Green

Established in 1996, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) is a vibrant arts organisation that seeks to fulfill its mission through exhibitions, artist residencies, education/outreach programmes, and research projects.

The NGCI operates in both a local and global arena. As part of our mission to “promote and encourage the appreciation and practice of the visual arts, of and in the Cayman Islands”  we send Caymanian art and artists abroad as well as have many fine international artists visit, exhibit and work in the Cayman Islands.

Schools can book a guided tour of Images of Yesteryear. They can also book an Active Learning Session which explores the National Collection of art and covers different areas of the National Curriculum.

This DVD is available from the National Gallery.

Come and borrow rare and wonderful dvd’sfrom the Maple Arts Library at the National Gallery.

The pick this week is Federico’s Fellini ‘s 8 1/2.

This classic Fellini film is actually an autobiography of the famous Italian director.
