The Cayman Islands Ministry of District Administration and Lands Advises of the Removal and Replacement of Palm Trees in George Town

Royal Palm Roystonea Regia located on Mary St.

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands: The Ministry of District Administration and Lands (DAL), in partnership with the Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport and Development (PAHITD), the George Town Revitalisation Initiative GTRI) and the Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC) will relocate
three (3) palm trees from the George Town waterfront in April due to their hazardous positioning directly beneath overhead electric power lines.

The trees, one Royal Palm located on private property along Mary Street, and two Washingtonia Robusta Palms near the former Tower Building site, pose a risk to national power infrastructure. Due to their
height and location, trimming or continued maintenance is not a viable solution. The property owner on Mary Street has agreed to the removal.

Washingtonia Robusta palm tree located at 196 Seafarers Way, near the former Tower Building site in the George Town.

All three trees will be carefully removed by CUC and replaced at no cost to the Cayman Islands Government. The replacements trees will be planted at Central Scranton Park, ensuring the preservation of the species while eliminating the associated risks.

“Protecting national infrastructure and public safety is essential,” said Wilbur Welcome, Acting Chief Officer of DAL. “This relocation allows us to do that while preserving the trees for the community to continue enjoying.”
