It is extremely unfortunate that an elector was accidentally struck off from the register of voters. Mistakes do happen and it always pays to check.

The Elections Office admitted it was a mistake on the part of its staff.  However, the list had been updated and circulated at least five times since the voter was left off and the voter had not noticed it until after the cut-off point for the general election.

The Elections Office has sent out a lot of notices and iNews Cayman has published everyone we have received and many of them warned voters to check the register.

The law allows for errors and therefore places the burden on the elector to ensure their details, including any changes to their address, are correct as each quarterly register is closed.

Both parties made a mistake and it is the voter who has suffered most. The voter had nine months to notice it as the name disappeared from the role during the 21 July 2012 list and was left off ever since.

It is unfortunate but accidents do happen and it is because we are human they do.

There is unfortunately no accident that election signs have been stolen, defaced and torn.

It is the work of vandals and mindless individuals who don’t seem to recognise the seriousness of it.

Whilst this has happened before it has been more the work of pranksters who have “decorated” signs or written offensive words over them.

However, I cannot remember so many being vandalized and one particular person/party being singled out.

The vandalism to the Progressives’ (PPM) signs has been described as “ominous” and I can agree with that. Certainly the one near to where I live, Eastern Avenue/Watlers Road, George Town, where a long cut was deliberately struck through the throats of all the PPM George Town candidates was particularly offensive.

I cannot remember anything like that in the seven elections I have witnessed here.

As Kenneth Bryan, one of the candidates on the throat cutting poster said, “With election observers set to arrive in Cayman in just a few weeks, this was embarrassing for the whole country.”

It most certainly is and the poster vandalizing MUST stop NOW!!
