The Editor Speaks: Another public scandal

And so the list goes on with public officials, normally being suspended on full pay whilst inquiries are ongoing, when criminal activities are suspected.

The very latest is now at The Cayman Turtle Centre where a significant amount of cash has gone missing.

As in keeping with all government departments a figure is not put on it.

At least this time around an employee has been fired and not put on a leave, or required leave of absence. Presumably this employee will not be paid.

However, he/she was initially suspended whilst an independent audit firm was engaged to conduct a forensic investigation spanning several years of records. We don’t know how long this took.

Managing Director of the Centre, Tim Adam, issued a statement yesterday (Thu 10). He said the missing money was discovered during the course of a 2016/17 audit and “we have promptly made initial reports to the Commercial Crime Branch of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, our Board of Directors and our legal counsel, The Office of the Auditor General informed the Anti-Corruption Commission.”

The statement also said after the audit firm had completed their work and produced a report it was, together with other relevant details given to the RCIPS. It was after this the member of staff was fired.

“The management of CTCEC will continue to liaise with the police crime detectives pursuing this matter,” Adams said. “So as not to jeopardize the proper conduct of the criminal investigation, that is as much as we can state to the public at this time,”

Actually this is considerably more than other government entities have disclosed.

One can only speculate when another public authority or government department is going to reveal another scandal.

There could be ongoing ones at this time that we don’t know about.

I suggest the Auditor General should keep a close watch on any public expenditure on big carpets. If there has been she had better look underneath them.

I’m still wondering what the reason for the purchasing of the pouf for the offices at the Port Authority….?

I look forward to hearing your suggestions…..

To hide the scandal sheets? That’s mine.
