The Editor Speaks: Chris Johnson prevails at Red Spot Bay

Mr Johnson has taken the action he promised in order to stop the Government seizing his land at Red Spot Beach. In November 2024 two politicians   McKeeva Bush and Dwayne  Seymour passed a resolution in Parliament to seize the land owned by Chris Johnson and his family which they acquired over 50 years ago.

A Government Minister, was so outraged about Mr Johnson’s refusal to sell the land to the Government that he said “blood would be spilt over the property“, for which he was reprimanded by the Speaker of the House.

On April 11 last week Justice Marlene Carter ordered that the Government take no further action in acquiring the property and that a Judicial Review be held to determine the outcome of the matter. On contacting Mr Johnson he had the following to say. ” I follow in the footsteps of many before me in taking on a Government in their implimentation of improper actions that are not in the interests of the public. I suggest that the Cayman Government learn from Sir Alan Bates who took on the Post Office and the British Government in his fight for justice and prevailed.

In the words of Woodie Guthrie ‘this land is your land; this land is my land.’ this land is for you and me.’ It is certainly not Government land. This action by Government is not only vote buying but a precursory action to acquire the land at a song to enable the building of a new cruise ship terminal.”

Mr Johnson informed me he has tried a number of time to get the adjoining owners of the property to help him “beautify” the walkway and area in front of Red Spot Bay to make it a nice environment for tourists to sit after they leave their cruise ships and/or wait for boarding. He has had no luck there or Government interest.

To compulsory take land from an owner sets a bad precedent for anyone purchasing land here.
