The Editor Speaks: Does Dart control Cayman’s media?

Colin Wilsonweb2Maybe and maybe not.

When David and Vicki Legge bought the Cayman Compass the very big whisper was the Dart group had supplied the bulk of the money. Despite denials from the Legges that is still the opinion.

I know personally the Legges were in negotiations with “someone” to purchase The Compass when my wife and I started iNews Cayman.

He also told me not to send any advertising sales persons from iNews Cayman to any of his clientele.

When Randy Merren announced he had bought CITN, CTS and Discover Cayman from Logic and was moving his HQ to Camana bay it didn’t take long for the whispers to start that Dart was behind it.

Now Merren has confirmed the Dart Group “helped” to purchase the two over the air broadcast TV stations and Discover Cayman.

When CNS contacted Dart about its interest in the station following the move by Hurley’s to Camana Bay, officials stated: “Dart frequently engages in discussions with parties relating to business opportunities. Dart’s practice is to neither confirm nor deny interest in such opportunities and on this basis Dart declines to comment on this matter.”

Very good and I cannot argue with that.

I am sure the control of content that flows out of both the Cayman Compass and CITN/CTS will stay with both Legge and Merren if what they say is true and I have no proof or otherwise to the contrary.

When WestStar put the big money into CITN when I was at the helm the editorial control lay with me.

However, there is an old adage, “Whoever pays the piper plays the tune”.

And that is correct. Don’t think for one minute I controlled everything that was put out by CITN. There were many battles fought and I didn’t win all of them. I did enough though to make sure my days were numbered and the rest is history.

With Minister Wayne Panton also involved very closely with Merren in television – his cable business C3, and the swing of UDP sympathizing radio presenters on the Rooster Radio morning Talk Show now removed I would be wrong therefore to even contemplate that was just coincidental.

Does the Compass Editorial Team ever criticize Dart? But then everything he does must be good for the Cayman Islands.

So does Dart control any of the media?

Let’s just say he does have an “interest”. But that is business.
