The Editor Speaks: Give the lady a chance
Our new premier, Hon. Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, has seemingly been tried, judged and convicted as guilty by association.
Being a member of a party led by a charismatic, strong and powerful speaker as ex premier McKeeva Bush is, is like being chained to a bulldozer. “Don’t do as I do, do as I say!” If you don’t you will be run over.
Are you forgetting that Mr Bush had and still has a formidable following? There are many, many persons on our Islands who still believe in him.
An angry Mr Bush is not a pretty sight. It is like a storm coming at you. All those UDP MLAs who voted against his government once believed in him, too. Some already have publicly said in a television interview after the ‘No Confidence Motion’ was passed, they still believe he has contributed a lot to this country and will do so still. They voted with their conscience and for this country because it was untenable for him to continue as leader under the deep cloud of suspicion. If Bush was to hold out an olive branch I would not be surprised if it was cautiously accepted.
I was very pleased to hear our new premier say her government has made a clean break with the past and would operate an open door policy, be as consultative as possible and move to repair the relationship with the UK. Wow. That would be a nice change.
So if this new team of five actually become a new team and do not fight the election under a reunited UDP banner, will they be a new party or a group of independents? That ladies and gentlemen is the question!
In the Enid Blyton’s children’s books, “The Famous Five” went on many adventures together and achieved much with the help of other persons they met on their journey. Cayman’s ‘Five’ will have to imitate that philosophy to achieve anything by consulting with the other MLAs on all proposed legislation and major decisions over the next three months – Parliament gets dissolved in March 2013 to make way for the May elections.
Ms. O’Connor-Connolly said she and her Cabinet colleagues had consulted with the opposition leader and independent members about their position before they moved to support the no confidence motion. With that in mind and an assurance that every motion would be looked at and acted upon as to its merit, the new premier was confident they could stabilise the administration and deal with important legislation.
There is a lot of work that needs to be done over the next few months and it will be interesting to see how their talks with Dart over the ForCayman Investment Alliance develop. That is one very hot potato!
Now Bush has gone, the police investigation can continue without any potential fears of intimidation and the “five” have pointed this out.
With the port and airport projects being the chief focus of the new government I hope we will see positive support and if there are disagreements (there will be) they are not aired in public and an amicable solution found quickly.
So, everyone, please give the lady a chance.
