The Editor Speaks: Hope of Cayman’s healing vanishes in moments
Even though the One Man, One Vote referendum showed a 2-1 majority in favour of single member constituencies he said incredibly he believed the result was still a ‘no’ because of those who did not vote. It compares with someone saying he believes the earth is flat because he can’t see the curve!
If that wasn’t enough he said to his UDP supporters, “It was unfortunate that it was hi-jacked by political bosses so desperate to grasp power they would trample on anybody to get a platform. Unfortunately what seemed to start off as a discussion about the political system and a choice between multi-member and single-member constituencies quickly turned into a tidal wave of PPM and political rants.”
He quite obviously has not watched and listened to his performance (and some of his colleagues) at his referendum “education” meetings.
He even said the election office was wrong about the poll being advisory. He maintained that all the voters who did not go to the polls had spoken. They would have voted “no” saying the “the results of the referendum spoke for themselves.” He maintained the people didn’t want the electoral boundaries redefined only to make it easier for the opposition to get elected.
He even blamed the PPM and Independent MLA. Ezzard Miller, for bringing in too much politics and then absurdly quoted from the constitution that deals with people initiated referendums giving the reason why the OMOV was lost. Mr. Bush this was a government sponsored referendum as you very well know and does NOT require the support of 50% plus one of registered voters. The OMOV campaigners did not hand in their petition to government. Government called the referendum, posed the questions and named the date. Nowhere in the Constitution does it state people who do not vote count as “No”.
Speaking on Radio Cayman Thursday evening, Mr. Bush incredibly proposed an entirely different voting system and said it was his intention to set up a committee to examine the idea of creating eight districts on Grand Cayman, each returning two members, and retaining the status quo on Cayman Brac.
Didn’t he just campaign vigorously for weeks saying the existing voting system had served us well for years and if it works don’t change it? Why does he ignore the will of the people who have just voted for ONE MAN, ONE VOTE and single member constituencies? Didn’t he just campaign saying the single member constituencies were divisive?
He rejected the Electoral Boundary Commission’s recommendation of a new seventh electoral district between George Town and Bodden Town, covering the communities of Spotts, Newlands and Savannah.
I am confused but still even more confusing there are still a lot of people out there who seem to understand whatever it is the premier says and agrees with him. I wish they could explain it to me.
