The Editor Speaks: I am a dead man said a caller

Colin Wilson2webNo it was not from someone who didn’t like my Editorials.

I was one of the increasing number of persons who have had a call from Windows Support out of Dallas Texas.

On Friday at 6pm my phone rang and my wife, Joan, answered it. She did not understand a word the man was saying on the other end of the phone call so she handed the phone to me.

The caller said he was from Windows Support, Dallas, Texas. My computer he argued was sending out malicious malware to thousands of persons.

“Rubbish!” I told him.

He was insistent. His company had received hundreds of complaints and my computer had been identified as the one causing this terrible problem.

“Your computer has been hacked!” He spat this out as if I was a Middle Eastern Terrorist Bomber.

I told him it was impossible my Windows operating system had been hacked.

Once again he said my computer was responsible for sending out thousands of viruses and malicious messages all over the world.

I asked him what my IP address was?

He said it had nothing to do with IP addresses. My computer had been identified through the Internet.

He said if I didn’t immediately engage his company to clean my computer he would turn the whole matter over to the Authorities that my computer had been identified as sending out thousands of malware and viruses. I would be fined and my computer would be immediately closed down and could even be confiscated.

I told him again it was impossible my Windows operating system had been compromised and this was obviously a scam. I told him I was now recording his phone call and to repeat everything he had just said so I could turn it over to the police.

He then snarled down the phone, “You are a dead man!” and the phone went dead.

It was a shame because I wanted to tell him I have an Apple computer and it does not use the Windows operating system that he said had been hacked!

After this had happened I called a friend and told him this nonsense. This is the second scam I have been the subject of. The other one appears to be on a much larger scale and I will relate that one as it develops – if it does!

My friend told me he had seen about something similar and thought it had been on the local news.

I went dutifully onto CITN/Cayman27’s website and there it was. SOURCE: http://www.cayman27.com.ky/2015/03/19/tech-support-scam-strikes-cayman

“Tech support scam strikes Cayman” was the headline. And this poor man had been scammed out of nearly $300. I am shocked he could have been duped but I do agree the man on the phone was insistent.

The report said “Several people have received similar tech support calls in the area this week.”

I hope none of those were duped and hence my Editorial has been written as a warning.

I did report this to a police officer friend and he shook his head in disbelief. I had also related to him the other scam I was following.

“Why are they picking on you?” He asked.

Why indeed?

It was only a few weeks ago I had received news that indicated I could die at any moment.

I have been told now, by a complete stranger, I am a dead man!!

Hmm. Perhaps I should see my undertaker?

Some years ago Joan gave me an Easter present. My own vault in The Watler Cemetery Prospect.

What’s that? Easter is just around the corner?

“You are a dead man!” Now that is echoing through my brain.

Watch this space.

Whoops. What am I saying? There might just only be space!!!

Dead man!
