The Editor Speaks: I am disappointed and fearful for our country
So much for “putting the country first”. The slogan of the Coalition for Cayman (C4C) today is “putting me first”.
My delight at C4C candidate Tara River’s election and the Progressive’s (PPM) leader, Alden McLaughlin’s offer of a seat in his Cabinet has already been dashed.
I am somewhat amazed that Ms. Rivers could turn down such an opportunity by placing a condition that her two elected colleagues be given Cabinet positions when both of them, Roy McTaggart and Winston Connolly, both stupidly said before the election they would not serve in a government led by McLaughlin.
Ms Rivers you are NOT putting country first. There is nothing wrong with a request to trying to get your colleagues on board but a condition is downright ill conceived.
It is disappointing that McTaggart and Connolly have not put country first and tried to convince Rivers to accept the Cabinet offer unconditionally.
With North Side MLA Ezzard Miller also going behind McLaughlin’s back and trying to form a government himself with a member of the PPM and the C4C bodes ill for a government of unity.
Now Miller seems surprised McLaughlin did not meet with him “to sit down and discuss the formation of the best possible government.”
If I was McLaughlin, I would be extremely angry. Miller was going to try to form a “best possible government” that did not include him and he is the PPM leader!
I can only hope Rivers can make her own mind up and use her good senses and really be independent as the C4C have insisted but not believed by the majority of us.
The voters have put country first and that is why Rivers, McTaggart and Connolly got elected. Now it is time for them to do the same.
As for Miller….. He hasn’t changed one bit. I am sure he really isn’t that surprised he didn’t receive a call from the premier designate after his shenanigans.
And me ….. I am just disappointed and fearful. I expected much more. How silly of me.
