The Editor Speaks: If Moses went into our ‘Burning’ Bush

Colin Wilsonweb2If Moses was alive and well here in the Cayman Islands and he was beckoned to go into the McKeeva ‘Burning’ Bush he would come out and present us with a set of tablets containing commandments/laws that would sound as if he was really God.

You see, our Leader of the Opposition, I am firmly convinced, really does believe he is the only person who knows what is best for us.

Of course, what he believes is good for us is even better for him.

He can do no wrong.

Another Bush, his Deputy, Bernie, who McKeeva had not had as his running mate until the last Election when two of his previous supporters had turned on him, paid McKeeva this compliment recently (see http://www.ieyenews.com/wordpress/farewell-colombias-charge-daffaires-william-bush-tribute-from-cayman-islands/) “In his position, he was able to accomplish his task without indulging in the party politics, but rather, choosing to do what is good for his country, and its citizens, thereby, following the old idiom of ‘country first, before self.”

Yes Bernie really was speaking about William McKeeva Bush.

When McKeeva’s government were in power and achieved very little and had great difficulty in putting together a balanced budget that satisfied our overseers in the UK it was the fault of the previous government (the now ruling Progressives). That is, according to the Law of McKeeva. It’s written on those tablets.

When Premier Arden McLaughlin gave himself a pat on the back for the Progressives first two years of getting the country back on its feet with balanced budgets that met with UK approval it was actually because of the previous McKeeva government.

In McKeeva’s burning tirade in the Legislative Assembly last week on the Budget he took credit for the surplus and tourism successes claiming the Progressives had stolen his policies. The premier was misleading the public he said with “sneaky, dirty, evil talk”. Then came this piece of wisdom, “I always know when they are getting licked as they stoop to lies.”

The Progressives “speak evil” and “distort facts”.

I have to repeat in case you haven’t read this properly – McKeeva said this about the current government. It was NOT the other way round.

And with only one real fact he could bring out of the Burning Bush we had the “severe, reckless mismanagement” and “wanton spending” of the 2005/09 Progressives/PPM government. How much longer is he going to bash that drum?

Through HIS efforts he had kept Cayman afloat and McLaughlin was suffering from amnesia.

It was at the expense of the people of the Cayman Islands that we now had a surplus. “We are winning the battle to meet the FCO requirements but Caymanians are losing the war. The economy is still in the doldrums,” he said.

The reason he couldn’t get anything done was because people didn’t want change but wanted everything.

So he has admitted he couldn’t get anything done when he was premier!

The reason he had increased the tax on fuel was, yes you probably have guessed it, was because of the mismanagement by the previous government.

And finally on the tablets is OMOV. “One Man. One Vote”.

McKeeva is campaigning hard to get another referendum on OMOV. Even though he must know he will lose it will delay the inevitable for another six years. This will ensure he will be able to control West Bay that is falling apart, politically, for him. With the present system he has a much better chance even though it must have been a horrible shock that Tara Rivers came second in the last election. With OMOV he will be lucky to hold onto to two elected members from his party.

But this, of course, is not the reason McKeeva is against OMOV. OMOV will divide the country he claims.

How and why this will happen he doesn’t explain. But McKeeva does not have to back up anything with facts. Keep saying it and eventually it will get believed.

He has a problem now. He has been getting away with it for years but suddenly McLaughlin has come out fighting. The Premier is thankfully not staying quiet. And he is winning every round. He backs up his statements with facts and sends it to the media.

This media house publishes ALL prepared speeches we receive in full.

McLaughlin in his speech (published today under Front Page News) said:

“There is an ancient saying Madame Speaker that goes like this:
‘Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.’
“The Leader of the Opposition understands full well that if he can repeat something enough times, however far from the facts he is straying, there will be those who may start to believe him; and if unchallenged then myth can be thought of as fact.

“But his wandering around the facts will not go unchallenged and I will return both him, as well as the media who report these myths, to the facts.”

The Premier finished with a wonderful sting:

“Apparently the Leader of the Opposition is now gravely concerned at the prospect of facing an election based on single member districts. I feel sorry for him but that is a reality to which he must reconcile himself.”

You won’t find that on the tablets.

Moses would I’m afraid not just break the new Burning Bush ones he would take a pneumatic drill to them.
