The Editor Speaks: Is this another plot by the Governor?
And we mustn’t forget the past Auditor General, who Bush was so pleased to have seen the back of (because unlike some of his predecessors he actually was doing the job he was paid to do), only to find his replacement was just as bad, if not, worse. He also is doing his job!
And then we have the media. It appears only Cayman Net News has escaped his wrath and The Caymanian Compass and iNews Cayman have both received our share of attacks from him with claims of bad journalism and political opinions against him. However, all of this is nothing at what he says about Cayman News Service:
“It is well known that Cayman News Service (CNS) is closely connected with the Governor’s Office, the Office of the Commissioner of Police and other political candidates opposed to myself and the UDP and it should be evident that they will stop at nothing. I have no doubt that if they could, they would eliminate me altogether from the election process.”
CNS carried a story that a donation of $1M was received by the University College of the Caribbean (UCC), Jamaica by an originating source in New York in relation to a special degree that was to be given to McKeeva Bush but was returned after the college deferred awarding the honour. Bush issued a statement in response because CNS claimed the police and the Anti-Corruption Commission were currently investigating the money transfer. He said he knew nothing about the reported donation “and this is the first time I am hearing about it,” he said.
So we have some kind anonymous benefactor who thinks the Cayman Islands ex-premier (he was actually still but only just the premier then) deserved a doctorate from a credited University and sends them $1M. Bush believes this is being awarded because of all his past achievements and to much publicity, despite having been arrested just days before and questioned by police for two days, went straight to the college, where he delivered an address on integrity but did not receive the degree.
The UCC confirmed they had received the gift and sent it back to the originating bank because the honoury degree was not conferred.
So who is this mysterious benefactor? Bush links all this to Governor Taylor and Commissioner Baines saying it was all orchestrated by them because his arrest was made for having books at his home office the day before he was to go to Jamaica.
How this benefactor connects to Taylor and Baines I can’t quite follow unless Bush is saying they were the $1M benefactors and it was all part of a dastardly plot against him?
Now we have another law suit the Cayman government is facing as a result of Bush’s last minute decision to award the contract to deal with the George Town dump problem to Dart’s DECCO. At the same time a US-based waste-management firm, Wheelabrator, had been selected by the then Deputy Premier, Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, to begin talks on the dump problem after they had put together a competitive bid.
The local partner for Wheelabrator, Peter Campbell, was a founding member of the UDP but resigned his position before he teamed up with Wheelabrator and spearheaded the talks he was having with the UDP government.
Now Campbell, on behalf of Wheelabrator is asking for a judicial review of the decision to select DECCO.
Campbell claims that the unlawful and illegal decision should be set aside because government failed to comply with the 2010 Financial Regulations and the Public Management and Finance Law, which governs the local procurement process.
Although DECCO were one of the bidders, the Central Tenders Committee (CTC) found DECCO’s bid was one of the least favourable.
So why did Bush award the dump contract to DECCO?
Why did Bush award the cruise ship berthing facility to China Harbor Engineering Company?
Why does suspicion surround everything Bush does?
And there are still people living in the Cayman Islands who actually believe all is above board with Bush and the suspicions are planted by the Governor!
