The Editor Speaks: It is everyone’s right to plead “Not Guilty”

A lot of people in the Cayman Islands may have been shocked at the plea of “Not Guilty” by Hon. Rolston Anglin, the Cayman Islands Minster for Education, to three charges in connection with an incident that occurred near the Avalon condos on the West Bay Road in the early morning hours of 23rd May 2012.

The Hon. Minister’s car was found in a ditch by the side of the road near the Avalon condos on the West Bay Road in the early morning hours of 23rd May 2012.

The Hon. Minister was found by his car when the officers of the RCIPS arrived to investigate the incident.

The Hon. Minister succumbed to a  breathalyzer test and, according to the RCIPS, he was over the legal limit.

The Hon. Minister was charged with exceeding the drinking and driving limit.

The Hon. Minister pleaded “Not Guilty”.

The Hon. Minister was charged with driving without due care and attention.

The Hon. Minister pleaded “Not Guilty”.

The Hon. Minister was charged with driving while impaired.

The Hon. Minister pleaded “Not Guilty”.

The Hon. Minister is a role model and Cayman Islands Minister for Education.

The Hon. Minister sets an example for his conduct to the youth of our Islands.

The Hon. Minister’s conduct has to be exemplary, as it will be copied.

The Hon. Minister has the right to plead “Guilty” if he knows he committed the offences he has been charged with.

The Hon. Minister also has the right to plead “Not Guilty”.

The Hon. Minister has exercised this right.
