The Editor Speaks: The 19th hole
The draft maps drawn up by the Electoral Boundary Commission to introduce single member constituencies and one man, one vote in time for the 2017 general election have added a nineteenth seat. By so doing they have made a gigantic hole that many people have voiced their dissatisfaction with.
The reason given by the Commission for this extra seat was to create even numbers in the new constituencies within the existing historical boundaries of Grand Cayman’s three largest districts. They were able to create new constituencies within the main districts of Bodden Town, George Town and West Bay with approx. 1,340 qualified electors. The variance factor was only 64 potential voters between the smallest and largest seats.
The cost of providing this extra seat will be around $130,000 a year to cover the salary, benefits and constituency costs for another MLA.
I think it is absurd. With the ever changing of the population numbers what is fine now will be most likely very different in ten years time.
Now we have another absurdity with former would be MLA Kenneth Bryan seizing his chance at some publicity and asking for the whole matter to go to another referendum.
This of course would almost certainly scupper the chances of the One Man, One Vote electoral system coming into place in time for the next election. I am sure Bryan will get full support from McKeeva Bush and his West Bay buddies.
I am not going to give Bryan any more space to his nonsense and mischief making. He has the means over at CNS where he is now employed.
If he thinks any of his “words of wisdom” will help his chances at the next election whether it is the One Man, One Vote, or heaven help us, the existing system, he is badly mistaken.
There is bound to be confusion enough with the new system that will be a challenge for people to understand and I was horrified when the Commission came up with 19th hole.
It was probably on their minds when they had finished their work and it was the first place they all went to.
And a mighty big hole they dug for all of us who want the One Man, One Vote.
Hopefully government will see the wisdom of leaving the 18 seats we have now alone.
