The Editor Speaks: The 4 West Bay ladies and roaming wild dogs

Colin WilsonwebIt looks from the title, I am comparing four ladies in West Bay with roaming wild dogs.

I am not. They are two different subjects, although there is a connection. West Bay is one and the four ladies, Alice Mae Coe, Annie Multon, Ezmie Smith and Betty Ebanks, are like wild dogs on a mission. They will not give up easily.

The West Bay ladies as we in the media call them, as we don’t seem to be able to come up with another title, are still fighting the closure of the stretch of West Bay road along the Seven Mile Beach – see our story today in iNews Cayman under Breaking News “West Bay ladies won’t give up on Dart road closure – in court today (18)” at: http://www.ieyenews.com/wordpress/west-bay-ladies-wont-give-up-on-dart-road-closure-in-court-today-18/.

If you are not familiar with the story you must be a newcomer to theses islands or are reading this from afar. Please just put the words “West Bay Road closure” in our search engine and you will find enough reading material to last you at least a good part of today!

I am not going into the merits or demerits, nor the whys and reasons, for the road closure nor my personal opinion on it here.

I am, however, applauding the four ladies tenacity in not giving up against huge odds because they believe passionately in the cause. A cause not just for their own good but more importantly one they believe is for all Caymanians.

Another media house likened it to David and Goliath although the ramifications from David’s win would not be the same if the 4 ladies should win.

If the 4 ladies win the cost to this country would be enormous. Dart would have a lawsuit against the Government that would hit all of us hard. It is difficult for me to see how he could possibly not win his award of costs. The present government know this and that is why “they haven’t got the balls like the 4 ladies have” as a number of bloggers have said to fight it. If you can’t win – move on. All good leaders throughout history have done this. It’s the bad leaders that have not followed this basic principal and it has led to disaster and failure.

We all admired the Charge of the Light Brigade. I admire the 4 ladies of West Bay, BUT…..

And now the wild dogs of West Bay that roam in a pack and attack not only other animals, especially pet cats, but have gone after humans too.

There is nothing more scary in our society today than a vicious dog except a pack of them.

Most are looking for food and must belong to someone.

The ones roaming wild in West Bay killed a cat over the weekend and have attacked hens and even turtles. Even though they seem to have a taste for our invasive species of green iguanas they can’t tell what is OK and what is not. If it moves – kill.

The Department of Agriculture have said anyone having a problem with stray dogs on their property can call them to request traps be put on their land.

The problem with that is stray dogs don’t just roam on one piece of land. It would seem to me a lot of traps would be needed and that can be a hazard in itself.

The only answer is to have all dogs seen to roam at night from their owner’s land tethered on a leash. If that doesn’t happen then the owner of the dog should face a very heavy fine and the dog put down. It is one thing to have a dog loose in order to protect your own property. If it roams, however, it is not going to protect it.

Just suppose these roaming dogs attack a child?

It is like a hurricane. They do hit us.
