The Editor Speaks: What has been achieved by our elected officials and who is to blame?

Colin WilsonwebWith a general election coming in May and every week there is an announcement of Caymanians throwing their political hat into the ring, it is good to reflect what was achieved over the last 3 ½ years by our present elected politicians.

As far as government actually building anything – precious little.

As far as wasting the little monies we had and have generated – a lot.

As far as shouting and screaming at one another, threats of legal action against each other and the media, along with broken promises – a lot.

As far as working together for the benefit of our “beloved Cayman Islands” with the end chorus, “God bless the Cayman Islands” that sounds so patriotic – precious little.

As far as everyone blaming each other for the Cayman Islands current financial situation – a lot.

As far as showing good governance and leadership – precious little.

As far as being a good opposition and coming forward with alternative proposals to help our current financial position – precious little.

As far as trying to work with the United Kingdom and its representatives from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Her Majesty’s representative, the Cayman Islands Governor – precious little.

As far as showing the world the Cayman Islands is a wonderful place to visit with better amenities than other Caribbean Islands – precious little.

As far as adopting a policy of environmental protection and how it must work together with development – precious little.

As far as showing the world our leaders are role models to our youth – precious little.

I can go on and on and NOTHING makes good reading. EVERY elected member of the Legislative Assembly MUST take some degree of blame.

I have to ask each and everyone of them – do they really think they deserve to be re-elected?

Every country gets the government it deserves.

The reason – we elect them.

So who should take the most blame?

It is us. You, me, everyone.

Can we afford to make the same mistake again?

I pray not.
