The honeymoon from hell in Cuba

LONDON, England, Friday June 20, 2014 – British newlyweds Wesley and Heather Dyson had been saving for months for their dream honeymoon, but got exactly the opposite when the experience deteriorated into a nightmare described as “like a Cuban hell” by the bridegroom.

Events got off to a bumpy start for the young couple when they were allocated a twin room despite having paid for a honeymoon suite at the Paradisus del Rio D’Oro in the Cuban resort of Holguin.

Once that was sorted out, the new Mr and Mrs Dyson enjoyed a relatively trouble-free stay until the last day of their honeymoon, when they were ordered off their airport transfer coach.

The newlyweds, who hail from Lancashire, were accused of damaging a 32-inch television in their hotel room, and Mr Dyson was ordered to pay 10 times the TV’s cost value – 6,600 Cuban pesos or about £4,000 – or face the confiscation of his passport.

The 36-year-old former soldier was obliged to send his 31-year-old bride to the airport in a taxi before spending an extra night in a different Cuban hotel, trying to make arrangements for the cash to be put in place.

“The hotel was run by the military and we were advised paying would be in our best interests,” Dyson disclosed. “They said, if you don’t pay that within three days then an investigation will start and you will be held.

“I was in the army for 13 years and have been all over the world but I’ve never been treated like that anywhere. It was horrendous, like a Cuban hell,” he added.

Dyson, who now works as an HGV driver, warned other vacationers to be on guard when visiting “countries like Cuba” and to conduct a personal inventory of the contents of their hotel rooms complete with pictures.

“I don’t want anyone else to be waving their new wife off in a taxi in a foreign country on her own. It was terrible,” he said.

In the wake of the wedding and honeymoon expenses, the newlyweds did not have £4,000 immediately available and Dyson was forced to borrow the money from his father.

He is now hoping that his travel insurance policy will cover the replacement payment, but is concerned that by paying, despite the circumstances, it may appear as though he is accepting liability.
