THE WOMEN (by Clare Booth Luce – 1936) is a timeless comedic play about women and their relationships with men, about their society and all of those things that form it – status, role, motherhood, gossip, infidelity and intrigue.

Twenty actors, all women, play some 40 parts. Men are discussed and even talked with, but are not seen.

The play deals primarily with Mrs. Stephen Haines, Mary, whose previously happy existence is shattered by gossip, and by the realisation that her husband is having an affair with Crystal Allen, a counter girl at Saks. Mary finds she is not alone, as many of her circle of friends join her in the fallout from extra-marital happenings.

Surrounding her are Mrs Morehead – her worldly mother, Little Mary – her daughter-with-an-attitude, the gossipy Sylvia, the always pregnant Edith, the often-divorced Countess De Lage, the budding playwright Nancy, the wannabe Peggy, the ex-chorus actress Miriam and others, who weave a fascinating tapestry of betrayal, deception, and, in some strange way, affection.

THE WOMEN is rated PG13. There are a few references to adult matters, mild language and the period was one where it was fashionable to smoke.
