The Editor Speaks: Ezzard and Arden are a ‘force’ to be reckoned with
MLA’s Ezzard Miller and Arden Mclean may only represent the two smallest districts, North Side and East End respectively, but nearly every day we hear their voices heard even more than that of Premier, Hon. McKeeva Bush and absolutely obliterating anything from PPM leader Alden McLaughlin.
Despite the attempts of the premier to make the ‘One Man, One Vote’ referendum vote as difficult to get to the required in favour number majority, both Ezzard and Arden are confident they will win.
“Our advantage over the premier in this campaign is that all we have to do is tell the truth,” Miller said. “We have right on our side and while the premier may have might on his, this time right will prevail.”
However, the premier with his “No” campaign has all the financial resources of government and will be ‘educating’ us in the attempt.
The vote date has been cleverly chosen at the height of the summer months when most eligible voting members will be off the Islands on holiday. As for “hoping government will include postal voting and pre-voting, as provided for in the election law, when it draws up the referendum law in order to address that issue,” why on earth would he want to?
Hallo? Premier Hon. McKeeva Bush does not want a ‘One Man, One Vote’ system! Wily McKeeva decided to take the initiative and therefore the control by announcing the referendum would be conducted by Government. It was actually a stroke of genius.
Miller was absolutely right when he said McKeeva was well aware even some UDP members had signed the petition and that was the reason he had decided to hold the national vote.
Keep the campaign going Messrs Miller and McLean and I love your optimism. I am convinced you have more than the 7,600 voters who are on your side. It’s getting them to sign “YES” that is the “tall order” especially with all the odds stacked against you.
And on their disquiet that the Cayman’s authorities are hiding behind claims about ongoing police investigations in order to avoid revealing the details of possible corruption and other irregularities, I agree with them.
Two years of RCIPS investigations into corruption allegations and no sign of a conclusion is intolerable and it needs a stick of dynamite under their backsides ….. oh, now wait a moment, did I just mention the word ‘dynamite’?
Talking of dynamite, what has happened to the investigation relating to the recent shipment of dynamite that was seized by customs as a result of the importer’s failure to acquire a licence?
All the media houses, including I understand Miller, have been refused access to any of the email correspondence between government departments. None of us can find out who it was in government that had reportedly ordered the customs department to release the container load of dynamite when it had been imported illegally without a license. Both Miller and CNS made Freedom of Information requests for details but were denied because all communications and/or related documents formed part of a police investigation.
McLean has claimed that someone saw who tried to come and collect that shipment and someone in a public office received instructions that it should be released.
Now which wily government official would actually be responsible for hiding this information of public interest behind a police investigation?
