Torrential Rain Floods the Western Caribbean including Cayman Islands

A trough system is causing flooding rainfall across the western Caribbean, including the Cayman Islands, Cuba and the Bahamas. A severe weather alert has been issued for the Cayman Islands. According to the Cayman National Emergency Website, a number of houses have been affected by flood waters and shelters have been opened in some areas.

Over 300 mm (12 in) of rain has fallen at the Owen Roberts Airport on Grand Cayman, with the last two days yielding around 152 mm (6 in) each. Cuba and the Bahamas have had (50 to 152 mm (2 to 6 in) in the same period. With over three weeks to go in June, this is already the wettest June for Owen Roberts Airport since 2006.

Weather models are suggesting that another 50 to 100 mm (2 to 4 in) possible over the next 72 hours. The wet weather is possible through the middle of next week with some of it moving east across Jamaica over the weekend.

EDITOR NOTE: Over three inches of rain fell around the Owen Roberts International Airport on Grand Cayman on Saturday 8th June. Coupled with the rain and violent thunderstorm the airport was closed down for a few hours yesterday (8).
