“This 40th anniversary represents not just a milestone for Tortuga Rum Company but a celebration of
Caymanian ingenuity and entrepreneurial excellence,” Lawson stated. “Through every rum cake and every bottle of rum, Tortuga has carried the spirit of the Cayman Islands to the world. You have made our islands proud and inspired generations of entrepreneurs.”

The evening was made even more special by the presence of Her Excellency The Governor Jane Owen,
who joined the Tortuga Rum Company board of directors, management, and family members, for the
ceremonial cutting of the 40th anniversary cake. Guests were treated to a vibrant showcase of Tortuga’s
journey over the decades, which included a timeline of key milestones. This journey, from its humble
beginnings to its status as a globally recognised brand synonymous with the Cayman Islands, was a
testament to Tortuga’s resilience and excellence.

Founded in 1984 by Captain Robert Hamaty, Tortuga Rum Company began as a small family venture with
a vision to introduce Cayman’s unique flavours to the world. Captain Hamaty’s entrepreneurial journey,
driven by passion and perseverance, set the foundation for what would become a household name. With
Carlene’s unwavering support, the company developed its signature product, the world-famous Tortuga
Rum Cake, which remains a favourite among locals and tourists alike.

The celebration also served as a tribute to Captain Hamaty’s enduring legacy, which continues to inspire
the Cayman Islands. Although Captain Hamaty passed away in 2020, the Hamaty family and Tortuga Rum Company’s Board of Directors have carried forward his vision, steering the company with the same
dedication and innovative spirit that defined its early years.

Master of Ceremonies Natalie Porter, Head of Marketing and Communications, introduced each of the evening’s speakers.

Tortuga Rum Company CEO Eugene Nolan

Eugene Nolan, CEO of Tortuga Rum Company, said: The forty years of success that we celebrate tonight has only been possible because of the dedication of our ‘Team Tortuga’ – we say, members of our family – It’s their hard work, passion and commitment, both in the workplace and on the broader community, that have made Tortuga the company that it is today. There‘s so much to look forward to in the future of Tortuga Rum Company, including partnerships and growth that will benefit the entire community.”

Hon. Kenneth Bryan, Deputy Premier and Minister of Tourism and Ports, Innovation and Social Development, thanked the company for its 40 years of legacy in business, continuing its contribution to the economy, commitment to the community and local industry, and raising Cayman’s status as an international brand. “Tortuga is iconic to the Cayman Islands because it continues to give,” Bryan remarked.

“In tourism, effective marketing means providing memorable experiences that lead to the tourist coming back for more.” The unique taste and smell of each Tortuga Rum Cake was an excellent way of getting tourists to remember this destination.

Tortuga Rum Company’s success has had far-reaching impacts on the Cayman Islands. It has created employment opportunities, promoted local talent, and contributed significantly to the economy. The company’s products are popular souvenirs and a symbol of Caymanian excellence that evokes fond memories for millions worldwide.

As Tortuga Rum Company looks toward the future, the evening concluded with a resounding toast to continued growth and success.
