Tourists almost decapitated by planes landing in the Caribbean
You have to keep your head down near these airports in the Caribbean – or you just might lose it.
A photographer has captured incredible footage of a tourist who was lucky to escape with his noggin intact as he attempted to take snaps of a plane coming in to land on the Caribbean island of St Barts.
The photos, which were posted to Facebook, show the man ducking at the very last minute – but he still had his hand grazed by the wheel of the plane as it approached the runway at Gustaf III Airport.
We don’t blame this man for ducking.
Local resident and photographer Sebastien Politano, who filmed the near-miss, told the Daily Mail: “He just said, ‘It hit my hand, it hit my hand.’ At this time I think he doesn’t realise that he is a lucky man.”
Maho Beach is home to one of the scariest runways in the world.
Politano, who was testing out his new 360-degree camera, also gave an insight into what it’s like to get up close and personal with a Boeing 747 at Maho Beach on the nearby island of St Maarten.
The island is home to one of the “scariest” runways in the world at Princess Juliana International Airport, which is widely regarded as one of the best destinations for plane-spotting.
His footage shows a throng of beachgoers with cameras at the ready as the passenger jet approaches the runway.
The belly of the jet comes dangerously close to the beachgoers.
When the plane’s belly passes over the beach, the blast from the low-flying jet causes some of the tourists to lose their hats.
There are signs around the beach warning tourists that the blasts can cause serious injury or death.
