Two Men and One Woman Arrested; Firearm and Ammunition Recovered
An early morning road check by officers in the George Town area led to the arrest of two men aged 26yrs and 24yrs, a 21 year old woman and the recovery of a handgun/ammunition .
Shortly before 1am on Saturday (5th May 2012) uniformed officers, who were on routine patrol in the Seymour drive area of George Town stopped a white Honda motor vehicle. Due to the officers suspicions a search of all three persons commenced. During the search a semi-automatic handgun was recovered and one of the male suspects ran off and was chased on foot by an officer, whilst the second male attempted to wrestle the handgun from the other officer.
The first male being pursued was eventually apprehended and the second male was restrained after a struggle for the handgun; fortunately no shots were fired during the struggle.
All three suspects were arrested on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm and taken into police custody. The firearm was recovered and exhibited for further evidential purposes.
“Acting Chief Superintendent Kurt Walton had this to say, “ the arrests overnight of these three individuals is a prime example of what good policing is about. These officers were simply on routine patrol, when they spotted a vehicle under suspicious circumstances and decided to investigate. They never expected to be confronted with armed suspects. Their bravery demonstrates the level of commitment shown by our officers in the continued fight against criminality in the Cayman Islands”.
Anyone who has any information regarding criminal activities, is asked to contact George Town Police Station on 949-4222, the RCIPS tip-line 949-7777 or the confidential Crime Stoppers number 800-8477(TIPS).
