U.S., Scotland play to scoreless draw in friendly
GLASGOW, Scotland — In its penultimate international match of the year, the United States played host Scotland to a 0-0 stalemate at Hampden Park on Friday.
The Americans, who clinched their seventh consecutive World Cup berth in September, complete their 2013 schedule at Austria on Tuesday.
Scotland attempted the encounter’s first three shots in the opening 11 minutes — two by Steven Fletcher and one by Craig Conway — before Jozy Altidore took the Americans’ first in the 14th minute, sailing his effort well over the crossbar.
Four minutes later, midfielder Michael Bradley sent a ball into the penalty area to Altidore, who slid it back to overlapping left-back DaMarcus Beasley. His effort, however, was blocked by a defender.
The visitors continued to push for a goal in the 33rd minute. Bradley again delivered the ball into the box for Brad Evans to tap it towards the net. A waiting Altidore was ready to knock it in, but an alert Scottish defender intervened.
Shortly afterwards, Robert Snodgrass gathered a throw-in, drawing U.S. defenders Omar Gonzalez and Evans in his direction. As the Norwich City winger dropped the ball to Conway, goalkeeper Tim Howard came off his line, forcing the shot to go wide.
Altidore tried to break the deadlock three minutes after the break, firing directly at goalkeeper David Marshall.
Snodgrass’ curling free kick in the 53rd minute looked destined for the upper right corner until Howard made the save.
Trying to inject fresh legs into the match, U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann made three changes in the 62nd minute, replacing Eddie Johnson, Jermaine Jones and Sacha Kljestan with Brek Shea, Mix Diskerud and Aron Johannsson, respectively.
Johannsson forced Marshall to make a stop with seven minutes left in regulation time and powered another try wide two minutes later.
The U.S., which saw its winning streak end at three games, defeated Scotland, 5-1, in their previous meeting last year in Jacksonville, Florida.
