Screen shot 2014-02-23 at 4.59.35 PMThe University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) presents the 2014 Caribbean Conference, with the “Towards a Corruption-Free Caribbean: Ethics, Values, Trust and Morality,” 19-21 March, 2014.

For this 2014 conference, UCCI is collaborating with Canada’s Carleton University’s Centre for Values and Ethics (COVE); the Department of Government of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Jamaica; and the National Integrity Action (NIA) of Jamaica.

This conference aims to reflect on various aspects of values and ethics, as they relate not only to the function of Caribbean governments and political parties, but also to the role of every institution – whether educational, religious, or social — across the region.

The importance of this conference lies in the principle that values and ethical philosophies are intrinsic to every human activity. Interrogations of these mores have consequences for the policies and practices of public institutions at all levels. In turn, the choices about values in these institutions impact individuals, families, and, indeed, nations.

One of the most important exercises, therefore, is to deliberate thoughtfully about values, making sure that decisions are accordingly responsive to the voices of reason and humanity.

The conference format will include plenary and breakout sessions, during which papers will be presented. Programme details are to follow.

The format for presenting papers will be 20-minute oral presentation by each speaker (followed by 15-minute, end-of-session discussions). Each session will be chaired to ensure presenters keep to this timetable, and 15-minute periods are allowed for movement between sessions. Fortunately, all rooms are located in close proximity, so moving between sessions should be relatively smooth.

Standard presentation set-up will be available, including laptop and overhead projection.

Operating under the theme “Towards a Corruption-Free Caribbean: Ethics, Values, Trust and Morality,” the 2014 Conference is being hosted by the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI). This university is collaborating with Canada’s Carleton University’s Centre for Values and Ethics (COVE); the Department of Government of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Jamaica; and the National Integrity Action (NIA) of Jamaica.

The 2014 seeks to bring together the main thinkers and political and civic actors from all over the region and internationally to discuss in an intellectually rich and open environment the values and ethical philosophies that have consequences for the policies and practices of public institutions at all levels in the region. At the centre of discussion will be the impacts of these decisions on individuals, families, and, indeed, nations.

An anticipated some 600 attendees will represent a cross-section of local and international business leaders; government officials; university students; education professionals and consultants; members of academic communities in the Caribbean, the US and the UK; and representatives of local professional associations.
