UCCI’s Fall 2012 Honours Convocation on Sat Oct 13

The University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) will be holding their Fall 2012 Honours Convocation on campus at the Sir Vassel Johnson hall on Sat. Oct 13 at 6:30pm.

The Convocation recognises and celebrates the achievements of some 140 students who have achieved a 3.5-4.0 GPA during the Spring Semester 2012 and have made it to the Dean’s and President’s Lists. In addition, the graduating students who have achieved the highest GPA in their respective programmes are also being honoured during this event.

Two special awards – the Faculty Achievement Award as well as the President’s Medal are being presented for the very first time.

IAUP Faculty Achievement Award

The International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) offers its members the International Faculty Achievement Award that will recognize a faculty member for extraordinary achievement in curriculum development, service, and teaching to prepare world citizens. The award is a certificate by IAUP. Each member president can request one award per year.

This year, UCCI’s President Bodden nominated Mrs. Lorna Blackman, Msc. Ed., BSc. Ed., Dip. Ed, Dual Entry Programme Coordinator. The award is being presented in recognition of excellence in the preparation of the Year 12 Dual Entry Programme students to be exemplary citizens.

Mrs. Blackman has been instrumental to the success of the Year 12 Dual Entry Programme introduced during the last Academic Year 2011-2012. Many of the students from the programme garnered the distinction of being in the President’s and Dean’s lists for Spring and Fall 2012.

They have also been involved in various community projects such as Beach Clean-up at SMB, Reading Hour at GT Primary School and House Painting/Cleaning for a physically challenged young lady. These students also participated in the Vybzing Youth Forum sponsored by the Caribbean Development Bank. One of the students, Nordania Stewart, address the CDB Board of Governors at the Annual General Meeting held at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.

“THE PRESIDENT’S MEDAL”

GUIDELINES FOR THE AWARD OF THE PRESIDENT’S MEDAL

This special award of distinction will be made to a person who has made a signal, substantial and lasting contribution to the welfare and development of the University College of the Cayman Islands, or has enabled the University College to access significant resources for the achievement of its mission of preparing cohorts of the Islands’ youth to achieve excellence through quality tertiary level education, through teaching, outreach to College and community, service and research.

While the award is called the President’s Medal, the recipient must meet the approval of the Board of Governors, after having been approved by the Administrative and Academic Committee.

The Award does not need to be made annually.  It is suggested that the criteria be strictly adhered to and that no Award should be given without the majority consent of Board Members.

The Recipient can be a member of the College community, a civil servant, a member of the private sector, inclusive of non-governmental organizations, but holders of elected public office are excluded.
