UDP District Chairperson Dies after Car Accident

c27-janet-farrington-martinezIt was with much shock and sadness to learn that the female driving a 2001 Toyota Rav 4 along Mount Pleasant Road around 8:30pm on Wednesday (Feb 27), when the car veered off the road and smashed into a roadside pole, was identified as Janet Farrington-Martinez.

Ms Farrington-Martnez died in hospital. She was 42 years of age, married with two children aged 10 and 11.

She was the West Bay United Democratic Party’s (UDP) district chairperson and worked as human resources manager at Global Directories.

The accident happened only yards from her home.

Dr. Delroy Jefferson, medical director of the Health Services Authority, said Ms Farrington-Martinez suffered significant blood loss due to internal bleeding caused by a severely lacerated liver.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital at 1.10am Thursday.

Tributes to the life of Janet Farrington-Martinez included people she worked with at Global Directories. One of her co-workers said she was “the life and soul of the party. We couldn’t have a social event without Janet.

Many people described her as having a “bubbly” personality.

Mark Macfee, executive vice president at Global Directories, said she had played a big part in the company’s community work, including helping run beach cleanups and man water stands during a community run for cancer research.

McKeeva Bush, UDP leader and former Cayman Islands premier, said she was a “loving and excellent daughter, mother and wife. As chairman of the UDP in West Bay, she assisted me over the years in many projects from nation building scholarships and emergency shelters to issues that affect women and children in the district and island wide. Her loss is not easily replaced.”
